Jobs for ex-military: engineering, technical and civilian careers

Updated

Leaving the forces in numbers

Each figure comes from the body that publishes it. ONS does not publish pay for the armed forces, so civilian jobs are compared with the UK median for all full-time employees.

22 civilian routes at a glance

The change column compares each job's ONS full-time median with the UK full-time median for all employees, £39,039. It tells you how a job pays against the whole labour market, not against your service pay.

Each route in detail

For each job: why service experience carries over, the realistic way in, the checks the National Careers Service lists, whether you need a degree, and the ONS figure with its caveats.

Engineering, maintenance and advanced manufacturing

For technicians and engineers, and the largest group here. Service training is a strong base, and apprenticeships, college courses or accreditation schemes turn it into a civilian qualification. Automation and 3D printing build on the same fault-finding and procedure skills.

FromArmed forcesToMaintenance fitter

Median pay£40,760a year

Keeping vehicles, weapons systems, generators or aircraft serviceable is maintenance work: planned servicing, fault finding and records. Factories need the same discipline to keep production lines running.

Schemes that open doors

  • Civil Service, Great Place to Work for Veterans: you progress to the next stage for most vacancies, whether an interview or an online test.
  • Advance into Justice: HM Prison and Probation Service career opportunities exclusively for veterans and their spouses or civil partners.
  • Armed Forces Covenant employers: GOV.UK links to a searchable list of organisations that have signed the Covenant, some offering guaranteed interviews or flexible working for veterans.
  • Forces Employment Charity: career advice, job matching, CV and interview help for veterans, reservists and their spouses or partners.

Funded training and schemes

Service leavers have their own funding on top of the schemes open to everyone in England. Enhanced Learning Credits pay towards level 3 and above qualifications with an approved provider, in up to three separate financial years, and you can combine them with the Individual Resettlement Training Costs grant towards tuition fees. Check your eligibility with ELCAS before you book a course.

Skills Bootcamps (free, up to 16 weeks)

Skills Bootcamps are free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks for adults aged 19 or over in England. They are free if you take the course yourself rather than through your employer, and you are guaranteed a job interview with an employer at the end. If you claim Universal Credit, you can keep claiming while you study.

Subjects include digital skills such as cyber security and data, technical skills such as construction and engineering, and HGV driving.

Find a Skills Bootcamp on the official National Careers Service course finder.

Apprenticeships at any adult age

GOV.UK's only age rule is that you are 16 or over. You must live in England and not be in full-time education, and you can already hold a degree. You are an employee earning a wage, at least 20% of your normal working hours go on training, and relevant experience can shorten it. Your employer and training provider must not ask you to pay towards the training or assessment.

Check the pay before you apply. An employer can pay the apprentice rate of £8 an hour in your first year, even if you are 19 or over. After the first year you are entitled to the minimum wage for your age: £12.71 an hour at 21 and over from April 2026.

Source: GOV.UK, Become an apprentice; Apprenticeship funding rules August 2026 to July 2027 (paragraph 220); National Minimum Wage rates, published checked 28 September 2026.

Free Courses for Jobs (level 3 and some level 2)

If you are 19 or over and earn below £25,750, or are unemployed, you can get a level 3 qualification free in England, or a level 2 in construction, engineering or manufacturing. Subjects include accounting, business management, digital, health and social care, and teaching and lecturing. Local rules can differ, so ask the provider.

Advanced Learner Loans (level 3 to 6)

For a level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course at an approved college or provider in England, if you are 19 or over on the first day. There is no credit check and it does not depend on your income. You repay once you earn over the threshold, and interest runs from the first payment. For level 3, ask about an Adult Skills Fund grant first, which you do not repay. Level 4 to 6 courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 move to the Lifelong Learning Entitlement.

Common questions

Short answers, each with its source. Pay figures are ONS ASHE 2025 full-time medians unless stated.

What jobs can ex-military personnel do in the UK?

This page leads with engineering and technical routes: maintenance, automation, electrical and electronics, aircraft maintenance, field service, 3D printing and quality. It also covers planning and leadership (project, production, logistics, transport and facilities management), digital and intelligence work, driving and rail, and security, safety or teaching. It lists 22 jobs with ONS pay: 19 have a median above the UK full-time median of £39,039 (ONS ASHE 2025).

Can I move into automation or robotics after the forces?

Yes. Technical trades that fault-find on electrical, electronic or mechanical equipment are a strong base for automation technician roles, which add PLC and robot skills. Enhanced Learning Credits can help pay for level 3 and above courses if you registered in service. Our robotics and automation guide has the apprenticeships and routes.

What are the best-paid civilian jobs for veterans?

Of the 22 routes here, train driver has the highest ONS full-time median at £76,327, followed by project management at £59,834 (ONS ASHE 2025). A median covers everyone in the job, including people with years of experience, so it is not a starting salary.

What resettlement support do I get when I leave the armed forces?

It depends on how long you served. Over 6 years: the Career Transition Partnership's Core Resettlement Programme, from 2 years before discharge to 2 years after, with up to 35 days of resettlement time. 4 to 6 years: the Employment Support Programme over the same window. Under 4 years: CTP Future Horizons for 2 years after discharge. CTP Assist covers medical discharges regardless of time served (GOV.UK).

What are Enhanced Learning Credits?

An MOD scheme that pays towards nationally recognised qualifications at level 3 or above with an approved provider, in each of up to three separate financial years (ELCAS). If you registered during service and left on or after 1 April 2016, you can claim for up to 5 years after discharge (GOV.UK).

Can I use Enhanced Learning Credits after I leave?

Yes, if you registered while serving. GOV.UK says you can keep claiming for up to 5 years after your discharge date, or 10 years for some earlier leavers and some medical discharges. You can also combine credits with the Individual Resettlement Training Costs grant towards tuition fees.

Is there a guaranteed interview scheme for veterans?

In the Civil Service, yes. Under the Great Place to Work for Veterans scheme you progress to the next stage for most vacancies, whether that is an interview or an online test. HM Prison and Probation Service runs Advance into Justice for veterans and their spouses or civil partners, and employers who sign the Armed Forces Covenant may offer their own guaranteed interview schemes (GOV.UK).

I left the forces more than two years ago. Can I still get help?

Yes. GOV.UK points veterans who left more than 2 years ago to Op ASCEND: Careers After Service, a free, government-backed scheme run by the Forces Employment Charity, with specialist employment advice and access to veteran-friendly employers.

Can veterans get paid to train as teachers?

Yes. Get Into Teaching offers a £40,000 tax-free bursary, paid as £20,000 in each of the last 2 years, to veterans training through a bachelor's degree with QTS to teach secondary biology, chemistry, computing, languages, maths or physics, if they left full-time service no more than 5 years before the course. You do not need a degree or QTS to teach in further education.

Do I need an SIA licence for close protection?

Yes. The National Careers Service says you first complete the Level 3 Certificate for Working as a Close Protection Operative with an SIA-approved provider and hold a close protection first aid qualification. The licence costs £204 from 1 April 2026 and lasts 3 years (SIA).

Can I become a train driver after the forces?

Yes, through a train operating company's trainee scheme or the Train driver apprenticeship, which the National Careers Service says takes 1 to 2 years. It lists medical and background checks and living within 45 minutes to 1 hour of the depot. The ONS full-time median was £76,327 (ONS ASHE 2025).

How many people leave the armed forces each year?

13,050 people left the UK Regular Armed Forces in the 12 months to 30 June 2026, down 970 on the year before. Voluntary outflow was 60.6% of outflow from the trained strength, 5,800 people (MOD, Quarterly service personnel statistics).

Why is there no ONS pay figure for soldiers?

ONS ASHE Table 14 publishes no pay figures for the two armed forces unit groups (officers, and non-commissioned officers and other ranks). So this page compares civilian jobs with the UK full-time median for all employees, £39,039 in 2025, instead of with service pay.

Do I need a degree for a civilian career?

For most routes on this page, no. Maintenance, automation, electrical and other technician roles, project, logistics and facilities management, cyber, driving and security all have documented routes without a degree. Teaching in a state school needs a degree and QTS.

What if I served less than four years?

You can use CTP Future Horizons for 2 years after discharge (GOV.UK). Apprenticeships have no upper age limit, and Skills Bootcamps are free for adults in England, with a guaranteed job interview at the end.

Can my spouse or partner get help too?

Yes. GOV.UK says the Forces Employment Charity supports spouses and partners of serving personnel and veterans, including those who are separated, divorced or bereaved.

How we worked this out

Pay is the median gross annual pay for full-time employees in the UK from the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025 (provisional, Table 14.7a, published 23 October 2025). It covers the tax year ending 5 April 2025, for employees who had been in the same job for more than a year. A median is the midpoint for everyone in the job, from new starters to people with decades behind them, so it is not a starting salary.

ONS ASHE Table 14 publishes no pay figures for the armed forces unit groups (SOC 1161, officers, and SOC 3311, non-commissioned officers and other ranks). So the change column compares each job with the UK full-time median for all employees, £39,039, rather than with service pay.

  • Each job is matched to an ONS SOC 2020 unit group using the ONS coding index. Where several jobs share a group, the figure covers all of them, and the card says so.
  • ONS does not publish a figure when the estimate is too uncertain (a coefficient of variation over 20%) or could identify people. We say "not published" rather than fill the gap.
  • ASHE counts employees only. It says nothing about self-employed earnings, such as private tutoring or consultancy.
  • "Degree usually needed" is our judgement from the entry routes that ONS and the National Careers Service describe. "No" means a documented route exists below degree level, not that nobody in the job has a degree.
  • Apprenticeships are Skills England standards approved for delivery on 29 September 2026. They apply in England. Durations are Skills England's typical figures, and relevant experience can shorten them.
  • ONS publishes ASHE 2026 on 22 October 2026. We will update these figures when it does.
